Newsletter, July 2003Just Some Quick News Yes, July is almost half-way over, the summer seems to be going so fast while we enjoy all this great weather in the northwest. Thanks to modern transportation I can teach a whitewater kayaking class near the Cascades on Sunday and be back to Port Townsend touring on salt water. Monday I taught a bracing clinic to a woman who is riding with her partner across country to benefit breast cancer - on a huge pink motorcycle! The San Juan tour has solidified - we are taking the whale watch boat to Friday harbor on Thursday, touring the local islands and returning the same way Sunday. I have had requests to add another in late August or early September so if you are interested send an email! Click here for recent summer images... How about some teambuilding by kayak - great for those intra-office dynamics! *deposits needed to hold spaces in above courses Paddling Tips I heard a rumor a few weeks ago that teaching people to set up with a J-lean (or boat tilt) might be counter productive - so I kept this in mind during the whitewater class last weekend. I had eleven people on the river and almost all of them went over in current using the pose of my little stick figure - until they integrated mooning the current or correcting (through muscle memory) the dropping of the head (head dink) to bring the knee up. Either moving the head to the side (knee-bone-to-the-chin-bone) or to the armpit does the trick! I also modeled the position (with the head going to side) for a physical therapist and he said "you have to teach people that? It's perfectly natural!" Tooting One's Own Horn - Whitewater - "Great intro...felt like I got a good overview of strokes, river reading and safety." Deception Pass - "Fun! Bracing/rescue/stroke instruction explained well, and I enjoyed the current/eddy play (good weather too!)." Images/Movies Movie clips of paddling!
